ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Mode name different leaders in half our tracked categories
Ask ChatGPT for the best brand-monitoring tool and it leads with Brandwatch. Ask Gemini the same set of questions and it leads with Brand24. Ask Google AI Mode and it says Meltwater. That is one of five categories out of ten where the engines we track do not agree on the category leader — measured this week, not anecdotally.
The AI visibility leaderboard asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode a fixed set of 182 buyer-intent prompts across ten software categories in the US market, every week. The October 12 run collected 531 answers. This is what they showed.
Where the engines disagree
Each category’s leader is the brand with the highest combined score of mentions, citations and prominence on that engine’s answers to that category’s prompts.

|---|---|---|---|
| SEO platforms | Semrush | Semrush | Semrush |
| Keyword research | Ahrefs | Semrush | Semrush |
| Rank trackers | SE Ranking | SE Ranking | Semrush |
| SERP APIs | SerpApi | SerpApi | SerpApi |
| Web analytics | Google Analytics | Google Analytics | Google Analytics |

| Web scraping tools | Bright Data | Firecrawl | Bright Data |
Five categories have a consensus leader. Five do not — and in brand monitoring and proxy providers, all three engines name a different leader. If you only ask one assistant, you see one third of the picture and assume it is the whole.
What stands out in the numbers
Semrush is the closest thing to a consensus winner. It leads SEO platforms on all three engines (named in 73% of the 60 answers), leads keyword research on Gemini and AI Mode (ChatGPT prefers Ahrefs), and leads AI visibility platforms on all three. No other brand leads more than one category.
Gemini mentions brands far more often than AI Mode does. In SEO platforms, Gemini named a tracked brand in most of its 20 answers (Semrush alone: 20 of 20), while AI Mode named Semrush in 9 of 20. AI Mode answers more conservatively — fewer named products, more generic guidance — so mention counts on AI Mode understate brand presence elsewhere.
Citation rates and mention rates do not move together. Semrush was cited in only 3 of 20 Gemini SEO-platform answers despite being mentioned in all 20; on ChatGPT it was cited in 17 of 20. An engine can talk about you without ever citing your domain — citation share and mention rate are separate problems.
Proxy providers is the tightest race. Decodo (58% mention rate), Bright Data (57%) and Oxylabs (55%) are within three points of each other overall, and each engine picks a different one. A weekly run is the difference between watching this resolve and missing it.
Why this matters for a brand
Answer engines are now a discovery channel: buyers ask them “what is the best X” and act on the answer. But the answers are not interchangeable. A brand that leads on ChatGPT can be absent on Gemini — Brand24 leads brand monitoring on Gemini while ChatGPT puts Brandwatch first — and a rank-tracking program that only checks Google misses the channel where the recommendation actually happens.
The only way to know where you stand is to ask each engine the questions your buyers ask, on a schedule, and count the answers. That is the measurement the leaderboard automates and the AI visibility API exposes.
Methodology
Each weekly run sends every prompt in a category to every live engine as a fresh request — ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode in the US. Brands are matched in the answer text by name and aliases; citations are the sources the answer listed. A brand’s score blends mention rate, citation rate and average position of its first mention. Per-engine counts, movement versus the previous run and the full prompt set are on each category page and in the methodology.
To measure your own category instead of these ten, the same endpoints return the answer text, mentions and citations as JSON — the quickstart makes the first call in a few minutes, and the free plan’s 500 credits cover a first sweep.
Questions
Do ChatGPT and Gemini recommend the same products?
In our October 2026 run, ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode named the same most-mentioned brand in five of ten software categories. In brand monitoring and proxy providers all three named a different leader.
Which engine mentions brands most often?
In our tracked set, Gemini mentions tracked brands the most often and AI Mode the least. Mention rates differ by engine and by category, which is why a single-engine read can miss a brand's real exposure.
How often does this data update?
The prompt set runs weekly against ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode in the US market. Each category page keeps the current and the previous run so movement between weeks is visible.
How is the leader decided?
Each brand's score blends mention rate (the share of answers that name it), citation rate (answers citing its domain) and prominence (how early it first appears). The leader is the highest-scoring brand on each engine for that category's prompt set.
Can I run this measurement on my own category?
Yes. The leaderboard runs on the public API: the same endpoints return the answer text, mentions and citations these tables are computed from, per engine and per market.
