AI Overview tracking tools: APIs and platforms for AI Overviews and AI Mode

Tracking Google AI Overviews and AI Mode at scale means collecting the results page, or the AI Mode answer, per keyword, market and device, with the overview’s text and cited sources as structured data. Two kinds of tool do this. SERP and AI Mode APIs return results per request: SerpApi, SearchApi, DataForSEO and AnswerLine, plus AI Mode scrapers from Bright Data, Oxylabs and Apify. Visibility platforms run a keyword or prompt set for you and chart it: Semrush, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Otterly.ai, Peec AI and others. Google itself gives site owners Search Console, which folds AI feature traffic into ordinary Web search data.

Third-party facts were checked on each vendor’s own public page on 2026-09-17 and are linked. Re-check prices before you commit.

What Google provides

Google’s AI features documentation says sites appearing in AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in overall search traffic in Search Console, in the Performance report under the Web search type. The same page describes “query fan-out”, in which AI Mode and AI Overviews may issue multiple related searches across subtopics to build a response.

Search Console gives clicks and impressions in aggregate. It does not show which keywords had an overview, which sources it cited, or whether a competitor was cited instead; the tools below fill that gap.

APIs

SerpApi

SerpApi returns the AI Overview inside its Google Search API as ai_overview, with text_blocks and references. When Google delivers the overview through a separate request, SerpApi returns a page_token, which its documentation says expires within one minute, and a link to its Google AI Overview API to fetch it with the same JSON structure. The Google AI Mode API returns text blocks, references, shopping results, related questions and reconstructed markdown, accepts location, gl and hl, and supports follow-ups through subsequent_request_token. There is also a Bing Copilot API.

Pricing (checked 2026-09-17, pricing): 250 free searches a month; Starter $25 for 1,000; Developer $75 for 5,000; Production $150 for 15,000; Big Data $275 for 30,000. Only successful searches count.

Google parsing covers many SERP features, and AI Mode supports conversation follow-ups. Deferred overviews need a timely second call, and the pages checked do not say whether it counts as a search. Plans are monthly volume tiers.

Fits teams already on SerpApi for Google. The SerpApi comparison covers coverage and cost in more detail.

SearchApi

SearchApi’s Google AI Overview API is a separate engine (google_ai_overview) using a page_token, returning text blocks, reference links and markdown. Its Google AI Mode API returns text_blocks, reference_links, markdown, local_results, web_results and inline_shopping, with location, gl and hl, and resolves Google’s redirect links to publisher URLs.

Pricing (checked 2026-09-17, pricing): 100 free requests; Developer $40 a month for 10,000 searches; Production $100 for 35,000; down to $1 per 1K at the top tier.

The AI Mode schema includes local and shopping blocks, priced per search. Overviews that need the separate engine take an extra call.

Fits teams that want per-search pricing below SerpApi’s with a similar request style.

DataForSEO

DataForSEO’s Google organic SERP API returns an ai_overview item with markdown, references and element items. Per its help center, deferred (“asynchronous”) overviews are not retrieved by default; setting load_async_ai_overview to true adds $0.0006 to a $0.0006 standard request, refunded if no deferred overview exists. Its Google AI Mode endpoint returns an ai_overview item with markdown, references, shopping elements, videos, tables and ads, with location by name, code or coordinates.

Pricing (checked 2026-09-17): organic SERPs $0.0006 standard, $0.0012 priority, $0.002 live (SERP API); AI Mode $0.0012 standard, $0.0024 priority, $0.004 live (AI Mode pricing). It also sells LLM Mentions, a database of over 280M prompts spanning ChatGPT and Google AI Overview, at $0.1 per request plus $0.001 per row (AI optimization).

It has the lowest per-SERP list price, coordinate targeting and a prompt database for discovery. Deferred overviews are opt-in, the cheapest pricing is a queue, and responses use a SERP-style item model.

Fits high-volume keyword tracking where unit cost dominates.

AI Mode scrapers: Bright Data, Oxylabs, Apify

These fit if you already use the vendor or need AI Mode text and citations without AI Overviews.

AnswerLine

Two endpoints cover Google’s AI surfaces.

AI Overviews come with the Google results. POST /v1/monitor/google takes query, country (or gl), optional hl, location or uule for city-level targeting, device (desktop, mobile, ios, android) and pages (1 to 10). Set include.aioverview:

curl -X POST https://api.answerline.dev/v1/monitor/google \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "query": "best payroll software for small business",
    "country": "US",
    "location": "Austin,Texas,United States",
    "device": "mobile",
    "include": { "aioverview": { "markdown": true } }
  }'

result.aioverview holds text, markdown, sources[] (with position, url, label, description, and redirectLink when Google served a redirect), citationPills[], relatedLinks[] (URLs in a chip’s “related links” flyout that are not in the source rail), videos and ads. It is null when Google showed no overview; record that as “no overview”, not as an error. The same response carries organicResults[], peopleAlsoAsk[], shoppingCards[], localResults[] and the rest of the page, so comparing citations with rankings takes one request. include.paaAioverview fills People Also Ask items that are themselves AI answers, with no credits beyond the AI Overview add-on.

AI Mode has its own endpoint, POST /v1/monitor/aimode, which takes prompt, country or gl, hl, location or uule, and device:

{
  "prompt": "best payroll software for a 15-person company",
  "country": "US",
  "include": { "markdown": true, "expandProducts": true }
}

It returns text, markdown, sources[], citationPills[], places[], shoppingCards[], inlineProducts[], ads, videos[] and map[]. With include.expandProducts, merchant offers for up to six product clusters come back as result.productResults.

A Google Search task costs 3 credits, the AI Overview adds 2, and each page after the first adds 2. AI Mode costs 4, plus 1 per expanded product cluster to a maximum of 6. Synchronous calls add 2. The free tier is 500 credits a month; plan prices are on /pricing. Failed requests are not charged.

The overview and the full SERP arrive in one response, with city-level and device targeting, parsed AI Mode commerce blocks, the same contract for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Grok, and async batches of 500 with webhooks. At very high Google volume, per-SERP queue pricing elsewhere is lower per request. It returns data without charts, so reporting is yours to build or to wire into n8n or Zapier.

Fits rank trackers, SEO platforms and agencies building AI Overview and AI Mode reports into their own product.

Platforms

Platforms suit marketing teams that want charts rather than data pipelines; the prompt allowance is the constraint to check.

25 to 50 prompts sample a category; they do not cover a keyword universe. An SEO team with thousands of keywords can pair a platform for executive reporting with an API for the full set.

Selection criteria

  1. Surfaces: AI Overviews, AI Mode or both.
  2. Deferred overviews: ask how the tool handles overviews Google loads late, and whether that costs extra. Missing them biases presence rate down.
  3. Overview plus organic in one fetch, for “cited while ranking” analysis without joining two datasets by time.
  4. Geo granularity: country is the minimum; city or coordinates matter for local categories.
  5. Device: mobile and desktop results pages differ. Track both if your traffic is mixed; see monitoring AI Overviews.
  6. Volume and cadence: keywords × markets × devices × runs per month. Platforms cap prompts; APIs bill per request.
  7. Raw data access: if the output feeds your own product or warehouse, you need an API or a platform’s API tier.

Cost example

500 keywords, one US market, desktop, tracked daily for 30 days with the AI Overview: 15,000 results pages a month. List prices checked 2026-09-17:

Tool Billing Monthly cost for 15,000 SERPs with AI Overview
DataForSEO, standard queue + load_async_ai_overview $0.0006 + $0.0006 per request (extra refunded if none) up to $18.00
SearchApi Production $100/month for 35,000 searches $100.00, with room for separate AI Overview engine calls
SerpApi Production $150/month for 15,000 searches $150.00; if follow-up AI Overview requests count as searches, Big Data at $275
AnswerLine 5 credits per async task (3 + 2) 75,000 credits; compare with plan allowances on /pricing
Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit $99/month, 25 prompts Not designed for 500 keywords

Adding AI Mode for 100 of those keywords as daily prompts is 3,000 AI Mode requests: 12,000 credits on AnswerLine without product expansion, $3.60 on DataForSEO’s standard queue, $4.50 on Bright Data pay as you go.

A low per-request price can still make an expensive program if deferred overviews are missed or if citations and rankings live in two datasets you must join. Budgeting at larger scale is covered in AI monitoring cost planning, and batch mechanics in tracking AI Overviews with async batches and webhooks.

Metrics

Report a small set per market and device:

  1. Presence rate: keywords with an overview ÷ keywords tracked.
  2. Citation rate: overviews citing your domain ÷ overviews shown.
  3. Average source position: mean position of your domain when cited.
  4. Cited-while-ranking: keywords where you rank in the top 10 organic results and are cited ÷ keywords where you rank in the top 10 and an overview appears.
  5. Uncited ranking gap: keywords where you rank in the top 10, an overview appears, and you are not cited. Start content changes here.
  6. AI Mode citation share: your citations ÷ all citations to your competitor set, across AI Mode prompts.

A Python pass over stored Google results computes the first four:

from urllib.parse import urlparse

def on_domain(url, domain):
    host = urlparse(url).hostname or ""
    return host == domain or host.endswith("." + domain)

def keyword_row(result, domain):
    aio = result.get("aioverview")
    ranks = [r["position"] for r in result.get("organicResults", []) if on_domain(r["link"], domain)]
    cited = [s["position"] for s in (aio or {}).get("sources", []) if on_domain(s["url"], domain)]
    return {
        "has_overview": aio is not None,
        "cited": bool(cited),
        "cited_position": min(cited) if cited else None,
        "best_rank": min(ranks) if ranks else None,
    }

Aggregate rows per day, market and device, and trend seven-day rates, since AI surfaces vary between runs. The SERP feature change tracking post shows how to alert on shifts.

Request and response detail is on the Google Search engine page and the AI Mode engine page.

Questions

Does Google provide an API for AI Overviews or AI Mode?

Google's documentation for site owners points to Search Console, which includes traffic from AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Performance report under the Web search type, as part of overall search traffic. To see the overviews themselves, their sources and presence per keyword, you need a SERP or AI Mode collection tool.

Why do some AI Overview APIs need a second request?

Google sometimes loads the AI Overview after the results page. SerpApi then returns a page_token that expires within one minute for a follow-up request, SearchApi has a separate google_ai_overview engine, and DataForSEO charges an extra $0.0006 in the standard queue when load_async_ai_overview is true, refunded if no deferred overview exists.

How many credits does tracking an AI Overview cost on AnswerLine?

A Google Search task with include.aioverview costs 5 credits (3 base plus 2 for the overview) as an async task and 7 synchronously. Each extra results page adds 2. A Google AI Mode task costs 4 credits, plus 1 per expanded product cluster up to 6 when include.expandProducts is true.

What should I measure for AI Overviews?

Presence rate (share of keywords with an overview), citation rate (share of overviews citing your domain), source position, and the overlap between cited pages and pages that already rank organically. Track them per market and per device.

Are AI visibility platforms or APIs better for AI Overview tracking?

Platforms such as Semrush, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Otterly.ai and Peec AI give dashboards with a fixed prompt or keyword allowance. APIs return the overview per request, which you need if you are building your own reports, product or data warehouse.
